The StoryTown Radio Show is an exciting live production presented in the style of an old-time radio show. Each month features a new theme of humorous and heartwarming stories, all drawn from true tales from Jonesborough and the East Tennessee region. In addition to the great storytelling, the show also features a different music guest from among the best music acts in the region, playing a variety of old-time, jazz, country, bluegrass, and R&B. The ensemble cast features some of the area’s- and the country’s- best voice actors and storytellers in this inter-generational, multi-cultural performance group.
Each month’s script is adapted from stories collected in the hills, hollers, and mountains of East Tennessee. These monthly, hour-long performances celebrate and explore the culture, heritage, and history of the surprisingly diverse voices found in this region. Home to the town of the first Abolitionist Newspaper in the Country. Home to the state that made Women’s Suffrage a reality. Home to Warner Institute, training Freedmen and Women as teachers less than a decade after the Civil War. Surprising, heartwarming and often hilarious stories of the independent East Tennessee people come to life with a voice and accent that can be found nowhere else.
Since 2011, The Jonesborough StoryTown performance has traditionally taken place at the International Storytelling Center in Downtown Jonesborough, but due to COVID-19 StoryTown currently performs at the McKinney Center on the fourth Monday of each month.
The performance is aired on local NPR station 89.5 FM, WETS on the last Wednesday of each month at 8PM, and streams live at this time on their HD Channel 1 station at: https://www.etsu.edu/wets/programming/listen.php
StoryTown Podcast features a mix of current and vintage productions. It also includes the new “Voices from the Archive” mini-podcast, featuring clips of original interviews with area residents. The StoryTown podcast is available for free on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts. It is also easily accessible online at: www.storytown.simplecast.com
