The award winning StoryTown Radio Show will begin a new season of its popular live production at the historic Jackson Theatre with a special Gala performance on January 27th at 7PM. Doors for the performance open at 6PM.
StoryTown is reminiscent of old-time radio shows popular in the 1930s-1950s, filled with actors performing local stories, and complete with live sound effects created on the spot. Each show also features one of the top music acts in the region, and we are very excited to welcome Carson Peters in January for his first appearance on the Radio Show. A native of Piney Flats, TN, “Fiddlin’ Carson Peters” started fiddling at the young age of three. He performed at the Grand Ole Opry and was a contestant on NBC’s The Voice. He tours throughout the year as both a solo act and as a part of the band Carson Peters and Iron Mountain.
The special opening Gala performance is titled “I Remember the Jackson” and is filled with stories and memories about the newly renovated and reopened Jackson Theatre. The theatre was originally known as the Blue Mouse when it opened in the 1920s. By the 1940s, it was known as the Jackson Theatre and was a big part of the social fabric of Jonesborough until it closed in the early 1960s. As the Jackson neared its grand reopening, StoryTown went out into the community and collected stories about the theatre and what it meant. We’ll be sharing those stories in January inside the building that inspired them. We’ve got stories about first dates, first jobs, Teen Town, breaking curfew, celebrity sightings, and much more.
A gala will be held immediately following the performance on the theatre’s second level, featuring various desserts and small bites from local stores and restaurants. Audience members will have an opportunity to mingle and talk with the cast, writers, and directors.
Tickets for the opening performance are $10 and available online at Jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Historic Visitors Center at 423-753-1010. Season Passes for the 14th season are also on sale for only $90. Get a season pass and see all ten live shows this season.
The Radio Show is recorded for broadcast on local NPR station WETS 89.5 out of Johnson City, which can be heard the last Wednesday of the month at 8PM. StoryTown is sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission and McLeod Organics and is part of Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center.
