“It was around this time of year in 2014, that I was preparing to take the reins as Director of the McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts. New to the job, I remember sitting in the hallway of the McKinney Center on a cold Saturday in January with a couple other town staff waiting for people to come in and register for classes. We had just a handful of people come in the quiet building that day for the ten art classes that were being offered with six different teachers. In January 2020, the building is booming with 33 classes and 15 workshops for a total of 48 education opportunities with 21 different teachers this spring. The art program has proven successful. It is growing and is a product that our community respects and values.”
