DESCRIPTION:This October\, the McKinney Center is proud to present A Spot on the Hill\, the original\, research-based play all about the inhabitants of the Old Jonesborough Cemetery. Created by Anne G’Fellers-Mason while she was with the Heritage Alliance\, this edition of Jonesborough’s cemetery play features new characters. New stories include Revolutionary War veteran Robert Patton\, Jonesborough’s first merchant David Deaderick\, missionary Sarah Gibson\, and Sarah Blair who grew up with her future husband George when they were both enslaved by the Blair family. They were later emancipated and forged a life of their own in town. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to sit on. Seats are not provided at the cemetery. Come and listen to real stories of real lives among real tombstones.Performances for A Spot on the Hill will take place at 6:30 p.m. on October 11th\, 12th\, 18th\, and 19th. There will be a 2:00 p.m. matinee performance on October 12th at the McKinney Center (103 Franklin Avenue) and a 2:00 pm matinee in the cemetery on October 19th. At the outdoor matinee\, there will be ASL interpretation provided by BridgesEAST. The indoor performance on October 12th is ADA accessible. Tickets are limited\, and sell out fast\, so make sure you buy yours today. Tickets are $10.00.Audience members should arrive 15 minutes prior to show time. Parking is available at the First Baptist Church and downtown. It is a short walk up East Main Street to the cemetery from the First Baptist Church lot. A golf cart courtesy shuttle will be available for guests who need it. This program is not suggested for children less than 10 years of age. SUMMARY:StoryTown Radio Show: Workaday World
DESCRIPTION:On September 23rd\, the StoryTown Radio Show will hitthe stage with a brand-new show all about what people do all day. How do youspend your working hours? From educators to mental health care providers\, pizzadelivery drivers to small business owners\, farmers\, and rocket scientists\, wehave stories from multiple walks of life. This show will also feature theconclusion of the Shanks’ Oak story\, recounting the long life of Jonesborough’sHeritage Tree that stood on West Main Street for hundreds of years. \n  \nStoryTown performs in the format of a live\, old-time radioshow complete with sound effects\, musical underscoring\, live skits\, uniquecommercials\, and a great musical guest. Joining the cast this month are theMadrigal Singers from David Crockett High School. The Madrigal Singers areCrockett’s premiere singing group\, and a fan favorite. We’ll also havestoryteller Laura Simms with us. Popcorn\, candy\, and drinks will be availablefor purchase during the show\, and audience members can rent McKinney Center/StoryTownRadio Show seat cushions for just $2.00. \n  \nTickets for the show are only $10.00 and are availableonline at Jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Historic JonesboroughVisitors Center at 423-753-1010. SUMMARY:Artists Exhibition Featuring Vickie Fellers & Jennifer Dyer
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Centerwill be featuring painter Vicki Fellers and the late basket maker\, JenniferDyer.  The exhibition opening receptionwill take place on Friday\, September 6\, 5:00 – 7:00 pm.  The exhibition is free and open to the publicand will be up through September 27.  ArtistVicki Fellers will be present at the reception to talk to visitors and answerquestions about her artwork.  Friends ofthe late Jennifer Dyer will be present to do the same.  The artwork will be on sale that night andthroughout the duration of the exhibition. \n  \nVicki Fellers is an oil artist whose experiencespans over four decades. Born and raised \nin East Tennessee\, Vicki’s artistic journey beganwith painting with her mother\, a \ncreative soul who instilled in her a passion forpainting. \n  \nVicki refined her techniques with art classes bylocal artist\, Urban Bird. Under Urban’s \nguidance\, she took inspiration from the rollinghills\, rustic barns\, and quiet charm of the \nregion. \n  \nVicki infuses her paintings with a sense ofwarmth\, nostalgia\, and authenticity. In recent \nyears\, she has experimented with the versatilityof acrylics\, adding a fresh perspective \nto her art with different textures andtechniques. \n  \nVicki Fellers’ art reflects her lifelongconnection to East Tennessee\, a visual narrative \nwoven with memories\, emotions\, and a deepappreciation for the beauty found in rural \nsimplicity. \nJennifer Dyer was born in BlindRiver\, Ontario\, and spent her first few years in Sudbury before she and herbrother\, Richard\, were brought to Athens\, TN\, by their parents\, Dick and ElsieDyer.  \nShegraduated with honors in Creative Design\, an Independent Studies Program fromthe University of Tennessee in 1976. Dyer also studied jewelry\, off-loom weaving\, on-loom weaving\, filmmakingand more.  Jennifer is best known for heroriginal sculptural baskets. She taught basketry classes nationally; shedesigned award winning logos and she was a published writer.  She painted murals\, signs\, andwatercolors.  She also developedinterpretive exhibitions for the US Forest Service\, and the National Park Service\,among others. \nHer creativeskills were probably handed down to her from her mother who made all theirclothes\, socks\, and even made upholstered furniture.  Dyer said that her mother always had a needlein her hand working on something.  Hermother taught her that anything she wanted she could make.  This philosophy was probably the foundationof Jennifer’s desire to use the natural world around her for materials anddyes.   \nDyer beganteaching her craft and found great satisfaction watching the light come on inpeople’s heads when they suddenly understood a concept. She taught at Arrowmont Schoolin Gatlinburg\, and in other art centers in Jackson Hole\, Taos\, Seattle\, andAthens\, TN. \nOne articlestated that Jennifer was\, “an energetic artist who wears a sunny smile and hasa deep passion for her work.”  Dyerresponded to the journalist by saying\, “My work brings out a quiet side.  It’s a deeper side of me.  Deep inside me\, there is a quiet side.  There’s a little old lady inside of me\, Iguess.”  \nJennifer wasmarried to Wayne Strevel and lived in several areas of the United States.  Wayne has donated and secured many of thebaskets in the exhibition. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public\, Monday –Friday 8am – 5pm.  For more informationyou may contact the McKinney Center\, 423.753.0562.
