SUMMARY:Booker T. Washington Tour Opening
DESCRIPTION:This November\, the McKinney Center will launch a tour of the historic Booker T. Washington School building. Tours will kick off on Friday\, November 14th\, at 2:00pm\, 4:00pm\, and 6:00pm. Tours are free to the public and will be approximately 20 minutes long. This event will take place at the McKinney Center at 103 Franklin Avenue\, Jonesborough\, TN. Light refreshments will be provided. Those interested in Jonesborough’s history are invited to come to learn more about the significance of Booker T. Washington School. \nBooker T. Washington School was an institution for Black children\, grades 1-8\, from 1940-1965\, when schools were integrated. The building served children from Washington County and surrounding areas\, including Limestone and Telford. After integration\, the school was closed and the building fell into disrepair. The Town of Jonesborough later renovated the building and in 2013\, the McKinney Center was opened. \nTours will cover the history of education in Jonesborough\, daily life at school\, and the integration movement. We will also cover more iconic moments at Booker T.\, such as Miss Brown’s “End of the Year” program where every student was given a chance to shine. For students at Booker T. Washington School\, the building served as more than an educational institution. Many alumni recall the space being a second home. The McKinney Center aims to preserve the history of Booker T. Washington School and the firsthand accounts told by its alumni. \nTours will be open to the public on Friday\, November 14th at 2:00pm\, 4:00pm\, and 6:00pm. After November 14th\, tours can be scheduled by calling the front desk at (423) 753-0562.

SUMMARY:MLK Student Art Show 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Town of Jonesborough is proud to partner with Johnson City and Washington County Schools on their fourth annual Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr Day of Service Exhibition. The theme for this year’s regional celebration is\, The Beloved Community: It Starts With Me. “The McKinney Center is a perfect place for such an event\,” states McKinney Center Director\, Theresa Hammons. “This building was built and opened in 1940 as the Booker T. Washington School and served African American students K-8th grade. It was a building that divided our community’s children and now it is a safe space to bring everyone together. We couldn’t be prouder to host this exhibition for a fourth year.”\nThe regional MLK Day of Service Committee chose the theme\, It Starts With Me\, in hopes that the students will create and express in their or own or group art\, how they can make a difference in the world.\nStudents of all grade levels and abilities are encouraged to make artwork for the exhibit and will work directly with their art teachers at their respective schools to create the artwork for display.\nElementary School – Elementary students are encouraged to draw\, paint or color artwork using any medium they’d like that we are able to display.\nMiddle School – Middle School students can also submit their artwork\, or they can complete a group project or essay.\nHigh School – High School students can submit artwork\, an essay\, group project\, or they are encouraged to use video and photography as a way to express their art.\nStudents will be notified about this project by their school’s related art teachers. Students may also turn in their projects to their related art teachers for submission into the exhibition.\nThe exhibition will be on public display January 19 – 23\, 8am – 5pm with a closing reception on Thursday\, January 22\, 6-8pm. Culinary Art students will be providing light refreshments for the reception and the event is free and open to the public.\nThis event is one of many events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, and the Day of Service on January 19\, 2026. The MLK Planning Committee consists of the following partners:\nTown of Jonesborough/McKinney Center\nETSU\nJohnson City Schools\nMinisterial Alliance of Johnson City\nWashington County Schools\nLangston Education and Arts Development\nCarver Recreation Center\nLangston Centre\nInternational Storytelling Center\nFour 13\nFor more information about your student submitting artwork\, please contact your school
