SUMMARY:Soups & Songs Fundraiser 2024
DESCRIPTION:This annual fundraising event kicks off the holiday season each year\, always falling on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The McKinney Center and the cast of the StoryTown Radio Show present this unique event which brings together food\, art\, music\, and storytelling.Guests are warmed in body and spirit as they are treated to a delicious dinner of soup\, salad\, bread\, and cookies. Afterward\, they’ll be invited to a sing-along with the cast and the Jonesborough Novelty Band in a holiday performance of carols\, songs\, and stories. This year’s event will also include the talents of the jazz quartet Portail du Son from Dobyns Bennett High School and the Thankful Baptist Church Mass Choir. Each guest receives a beautiful\, hand-made ceramic ornament created by local artists.All the soups are locally sourced\, with at least one vegetarian option available. Guests may continue to fill their bowls\, trying one or all the delicious offerings.Tickets to this fundraising event are $35 and will support the McKinney Center’s special programming\, including the StoryTown Radio Show. The doors open at 5:30 pm\, soup service begins at 6:00 pm\, and the show will start around 6:45 pm.Seating is limited to one-hundred-twenty-five\, and purchasing tickets well in advance is recommended\, as the event regularly sells out ahead of time.Guests may purchase tickets online at Jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center at (423) 753-1010.

DESCRIPTION:This October\, the McKinney Center is proud to present A Spot on the Hill\, the original\, research-based play all about the inhabitants of the Old Jonesborough Cemetery. Created by Anne G’Fellers-Mason while she was with the Heritage Alliance\, this edition of Jonesborough’s cemetery play features new characters. New stories include Revolutionary War veteran Robert Patton\, Jonesborough’s first merchant David Deaderick\, missionary Sarah Gibson\, and Sarah Blair who grew up with her future husband George when they were both enslaved by the Blair family. They were later emancipated and forged a life of their own in town. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to sit on. Seats are not provided at the cemetery. Come and listen to real stories of real lives among real tombstones.Performances for A Spot on the Hill will take place at 6:30 p.m. on October 11th\, 12th\, 18th\, and 19th. There will be a 2:00 p.m. matinee performance on October 12th at the McKinney Center (103 Franklin Avenue) and a 2:00 pm matinee in the cemetery on October 19th. At the outdoor matinee\, there will be ASL interpretation provided by BridgesEAST. The indoor performance on October 12th is ADA accessible. Tickets are limited\, and sell out fast\, so make sure you buy yours today. Tickets are $10.00.Audience members should arrive 15 minutes prior to show time. Parking is available at the First Baptist Church and downtown. It is a short walk up East Main Street to the cemetery from the First Baptist Church lot.
