Twice a year, the McKinney Center opens their doors to showcase its students in Ms. Brown’s End of the Semester Program. During this night, the Center’s halls are adorned with a wide range of artwork created by the talented students that participate in a McKinney Center art class during the spring and fall semesters. It is a night to not only celebrate the student’s efforts and achievements, but to show off the results of a semester of hard work.

Ms. Brown’s End of the Semester Program was established to honor a 75-year-old tradition of highlighting student-made artwork, performance and aptitude. The showcase is named after Mrs. Ethel Brown, a teacher at Booker T. Washington School, now the renovated and renamed McKinney Center which houses Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin program. During the spring of 1941, in the mist of the inaugural school year at Booker T. in Jonesborough, it was then that Ms. Brown first decide to invite the community to see the unbelievable work done by her own students. She showcased not only her student’s talent in academics that spring, but also their capability and passion in music, literature, theatre and dance. Ms. Brown’s honoring of her students became a cherished community event that would later become an annual program where students were encouraged to show off their many talents. Now, 75 plus years later, the McKinney Center, formerly the Booker T. Washington school, is honoring Ms. Brown’s legacy with a student art exhibit and performance.

During the course of the McKinney Center’s spring and fall semester of classes, students of all ages are working towards learning a wide range of new artists skills. Classes offered include; painting, drawing, and ceramics, as well as hip hop, guitar, and creative writing. During each class, students work hard to hone new skills, practice their taught craft, and create new works of art. It is the job of Ms. Brown’s Program to then display and bring attention to the public the results of these efforts.

Hannah Justis, full time staff member of the McKinney Center and drawing instructor, notices the importance of exhibiting student talent; “It is important to praise hard work and effort, especially in something such as the arts. It takes plenty of courage and self-confidence to, not only try something new, but to put it out there for the world to see. Our students are important to us and it is with our student art shows that we can show them just how much.”

Ms. Brown’s End of the Semester Program is free and open to public. Held in the months of May and December, the reception is held on the second Thursday of both months from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. at the McKinney Center. The event will kick off with a student art exhibit among the halls and classrooms of the Center, where drinks and light food will be available. The work includes a plethora of mediums ranging from paintings, drawings, ceramics, mosaics and more. At 6:30, those attending the event are invited to the auditorium, where student’s participating in performance-based classes, like dance and music, will put on a brief demonstration of their new talents.

Ms. Brown’s End of the Semester Program is installed twice a year, once in May and then later in December.
